Mininova and Thepiratebay are public sites, they are okey if you know what you are doing, no registration and no requirement to seed. But on the down side, anybody can upload anything, including virus and trojan, untill someone report it.
On the other hand, private sites have registration and seeding requirements. They will ask for donations but you don’t have to.
However, at Demonoid.com they won’t ban you if you don’t seed much, and I have never been infected there. You have to go there from time to time to check for open registration, they do that so they won’t have too many members. Unless you can get an invitation from someone who is already a member there.

I think that Mininova is actually the most-used site for all things bittorrent.

I think it’s the best, first-stop for everything. I sometime go to thepiratebay.org for rarer things.
